First award level 1 and 2
BTEC First Award in Children’s Play, learning and Development is a vocational optional subject. Students choose this option if they have an interest in working with children from birth to eight years old. This includes exploring career pathways, nutrition for children, how to develop children’s language and literacy skills and promoting positive behaviour.
Students will be assessed through a mixture of assignment work and examinations, for which they will be carefully prepared beforehand. Successful completion of the course alongside the GCSEs in English and Mathematics will enable the students to progress to a more specialised course such as the Level 3 CACHE Diploma in Childcare and Education (Early Years Educator). It will also give students the potential opportunity to gain an Apprenticeship or employment in the early year’s sector in due course.

- Promoting Children’s Development Through Play (Core unit internal)
- The Principles of Early Years Practice (Mandatory)
- Promoting Children’s Positive Behavior (Optional)
- Supporting Children’s Language and Literacy Development (Optional)
Students must complete the two core units and the mandatory unit to reach a total of 120 guided learning hours. The course is divided in external and internal assessments. Unit 1 – Patterns of Child Development will be assessed externally, through a written exam, and the remaining ones will be assessed internally, through a portfolio built by the students, covering a number of tasks that will include written assignments, research activities and work experience assignments.
40% Child Study, 20% Research Task and 40% written exam.
